Wipro Spurs Ahead Into China With Software Unit
Filed in archive Outsourcing News on March 21, 2005
Wipro Ltd., India's third leading software service company, has recently launched its Chinese subsidiary. The company also has plans to set up a technology center later in the year.
Sudip Nandy, Wipro chief strategy officer said, "We are in the first phase of [serving clients] with a [Chinese mark]. The second step will be [setting up] an offshore development center."
Nandy explained that Wipro would initially deploy 35 to 40 Chinese-speaking workers from Yokohama, Japan. Later on, the company would hire Chinese workers for their software center. This approach is different from what software service rivals, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys Technologies, plan to employ. The two companies plan to set up software centers with Chinese workers right from the start.
Indian software service companies are now entering the Chinese market because of concerns over China's strong emergence in the outsourcing arena. Nandy and a NASSCOM delegation recently visited China to boost industry cooperation between the two countries.
