According to Forrester Research, 3.3 million jobs will be lost because of outsourcing over the next 15 years. Studies conducted by Goldman Sachs are less optimistic, foreseeing job losses of 6 million over 10 years. UC Berkeley studies have suggested that outsourcing puts an incredible 14.1 jobs at risk. Although the numbers are not clear, the message is: America is losing its employment opportunities at a terrible rate, putting all futures at risk.

In many cases, legitimate US businesses simply cannot compete with the lower prices that offshore companies and service providers can offer. The problem has only become worse with the advent of the internet – now any customer can go online to find a low-cost service provider or product around the world. Thanks to lower currency rates around the world, businesses in some countries also have a built-in advantage when it comes to hiring advertisers and marketers: they can hire these people to create powerful websites on their behalf for just pennies on the dollar.

In January 2006, the FDA issued a warning that foreign medications available to Americans via the internet and on vacations abroad contained different ingredients than US medications with similar names. The result is that US shoppers may experience health problems and even fatalities as a result of the confusion, according to the FDA. The FDA is constantly taking action against foreign web sites and retailers who sell counterfeit or unhealthy products, but customers may be unaware of these actions and may suffer personal injury or harm from unsafe products.

Worse, customers who have suffered from injury or harm as a result of foreign goods or services may have little or no legal recourse. With US-based businesses, injured or unhappy customers can seek compensation for any medical bills or costs they have to face because of harmful goods. Finding non-US-based perpetrators and bringing them to justice is not as simple or as cost-effective.

Outsourcing does not even help the world. In many cases, foreign service providers are paid a minuscule amount for their work. In some cases, workers are mistreated in order to make a company more competitive in the US market. Smart American consumers are saying no to this sort of exploitation and are turning to US-based service providers. These providers are protected by US laws and can turn to legal aid and other forms of help if they are being mistreated. Buying within the country may be the responsible thing to do.
