Filed in archive Outsourcing News on May 27, 2005

According to Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi, the company may outsource the production of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) to China or Taiwan. At present, only one million units per month are being produced in the product's sole manufacturing facility in Chiba, Japan.

Taipei's The Commercial Times reported that Hon Hai Precision Industry has been awarded the outsourcing contract to make the Sony PSPs. However, both Hon Hai and Sony have declined to comment on the report.

Sony plans to ship 12 million PSP units for this fiscal year. US and Japan have already received 2.97 million PSPs, while Europe would have to wait until its PSP launch in September.

Kutaragi said, "We have to somehow increase our production capacity as we're not prepared to start selling in Europe, we've run out of units in the U.S. and it's still selling well in Japan."
