There are two major reasons why pharmaceutical companies outsource. These 2 primary reasons are:

a. the screening of compounds
b. the preclinical testing of compounds

The functions which I mentioned could be considered as the "high-maintenance" tasks in pharmaceutical companies. Outsourcing helps a lot in terms of cutting the cost when doing the said tasks.
