It's Not About the Money
Contrary to reports stating that money is the driving force behind outsourcing, the research study done by IBM, Softtek and Unisys shows otherwise (and yes, they did team up for this research).

Rick Saia, Aberdeen's research analyst revealed the following results and insights:

While cost savings remain an important cornerstone of many IT outsourcing strategies, most companies, especially in the mid-market, look at outsourcing application work to boost the skills of their internal IT staffs and allow them to tackle more strategic work

Outsourcing has certainly developed since the time it was introduced to the corporate world. Companies are learning that in outsourcing, it is a two-way streak, the companies learn from their outsourcing workers and in turn, they also help these outsourcing workers in learning from them.
