German auto giant BMW has set up a manufacturing and distribution subsidiary in India, a country regarded as a growth market for European and US passenger cars.

The BMW Indian subsidiary will begin operations in 2007 with an assembly plant in Chennai and a distribution office in Delhi. The carmaker will put in an estimated initial investment of 20 million euros for their new Indian arm.

BMW hopes to increase sales in Asia from 95,500 units in 2004 to 150,000 units by 2008.
