Outsourcing News
by Carol Kendrick on September 26, 2006

As time passes by, it would seem that the tasks outsourced to India are becoming more and more sophisticated. Nowadays, outsourcing in India goes far more than IT outsourcing because there is now legal outsourcing, R&D, journalism outsourcing, and any other kind of outsourcing that you could think of.
Despite the expanding outsourcing industry, there are still challenges and obstacles that they have to go through particularly in Biotechnology outsourcing. One of the main challenges in this area is seed capital. Seed capital is needed in order to ensure that this outsourcing industry would grow and would really be a worthy investment.
Here is also an interesting quote from global consulting firm, Ernst and Young:
India's generics firms are positioning themselves to play a big role in the evolving biogenerics markets... It is also well poised to become a hub for processing and managing clinical data. Further, stem cell research will also help us create a niche.

This is booming period for biotechnology, the Indian Government also emphasise on strategic research and development in biotechnology. The Ernst & Young reports that revenues reached an all-time high last year of $63.1 billion, this is really encouraging figure. Cheers!

Seed capital is really not the greatest hurdle for outsourcing in India. There are plenty of academic labs and established firms that are well positioned for contracting. The central role of intellectual property in biotechnology is at odds with India's traditionally lax IP laws (which have recently been tightned). It is yet to bee seen how strongly India's new IP rules will be enforced. Furthermore, there's also the issue of being able to manage projects from half a world away and to ensure appropriate communication of processes and endpoints. Biotechnology has traditionally benefitted greatly from having researchers in great proximity to each other.
