Avon announces layoffs, outsourcing

Avon Products Inc. plans to dismiss 600 customer service representatives in the US in the next two years. Company officials said that Avon will outsource these jobs overseas.

The beauty products company will be phasing out its U.S. customer service operations in Morton Grove, Ill., Pasadena, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Rye, N.Y. The company will also lay off 50 workers in Delaware and reduce 300 workers in Springdale, Ohio.

Sharon Samuel, spokeswoman for Avon, said, "Avon has made the decision to outsource its U.S. contact service operation as part of our four-part, multiyear turnaround plan." An important part of this "turnaround" is cutting its cost structure by outsourcing its transactional and other services to low-cost countries.

I say enough. I am sick of American jobs going overseas. I would say most of Avons customers are American, yet they are sending the jobs w/benefits out of the country. I THINK IT’S TIME TO BOYCOT AVON!

I have a permanent wrist injury from working in their “jewelry rework” department as a temporary employee. The temporary service got rid of me because of this. I then found two other people with the same injury from doing the same job!(One was an Avon Supervisor, and the other was the “Temporary Service Supervisor”) I had to wait so long for surgery that it didn’t help. I still having to take pain medication. I worked Security jobs as long as I coould and even that aggrivates my wrist.

The job was nasty, too. We would re-pack pierced earrings to send out and were told we didn’t need to sterilize them first! I really needed to work, so I would go in the bathroom and scrubb my hands at break. It was gross!

I wish Avon the worst and hope they go bankrupt!

This week I had a customer (Yes, I’m a rep), have her debit card charged THREE TIMES for the same order. When I called the helpline, the guy that answered had broken English that was so bad (he suggested that I pay the difference back to my customer out-of-pocket), that I hung up! I contacted my district supervisor and my upline & I have not received ANY response from them, I guess they have better things to do this weekend!

There are other alternatives to outsourcing overseas. Rural America Onshore is a great exmaple. http://www.ruralamericaonshore.com

I’m so tired of hearing these companies moving their jobs overseas. Avon made $625 million at the end of 2009, so it makes me angry to think 600 people are going to lose their jobs. It’s not like Avon is on the verge of bankruptcy. I’ve stopped by Avon and will let everyone know they should too.
